"We took the kids out to play in the snow, when she was helpin' yer mama to get up..." Grandpa had tears rolling down his cheek.
"Grandboy, the sun'll be down for we know it, an' you'll be ridin' Ol' Tanner home in the dark, an' yer mama'd give me a good tounge lashin' if I were to let you go to late."
"You're right Grandpa, so I guess I'd better be getting on home. I'll go help maom with swome chores." I left it at that 'cause I could see the hurt in his eyes.
All the way home I was thinking about Grandpa and how much he must of cared about Grandma. Of all the painful things he'd talked about, this is the only time I've seen him cry.
"Mama when we get done hoing the weeds I need to talk to you about Grandma."
"What's wrong son, That sounded serious?"
"Well mom, it's about Grandma and what made Grandpa cry."
"Your Grandpa was crying?"
"Well he had tears rolling down his cheeks mom. And he said he'd get a good tounge lashin' if he didn't get me home before dark. I could tell he was hurt."
Mom had lots of questions I guess, 'cause she finished off that row and met me coming the other way. "Come on son, let's go have a cold glass of ice tea."
We sat at the kitchen table and before long mom had tears rolling down her cheeks while she told me what happened. How Grandma had taken her and the sled up the hill for the third time.
She said, "they were having lots of fun. All the kids sledding down the hill, throwing snow balls at each other. Just as we got to the top of the hill, mom, your Grandma, lost her footing. She went rolling down the hill and stopped with her head against a rock.
Mom grabbed a tissue and..."
